The Fearless Artist's Checklist for Your First Exhibition

Hi, I'm Lily Okamoto, and I never thought I would call myself an artist. Yet, just a few years after picking up a paintbrush, I successfully hosted my first exhibition. I want to share my unique perspective and checklist with you, so you can take the leap and host your own exhibition with confidence and minimal fear.

Conquering the fear of hosting an exhibition:

I hosted my first exhibition after only a few years of painting and was surprised by the positive response. My main goal was to gain experience as an artist, and now I can plan another exhibition within a matter of months. Don't worry about the turnout or sales; focus on the experience and what you can learn from hosting your exhibition.

Breaking the rules and redefining the exhibition:

An exhibition can be anything you want it to be. Even displaying your artwork on the street and creating content around it can be considered an exhibition. As an artist, you know how to challenge the status quo and break the rules. Embrace that mindset when planning your exhibition.

Partnering up or going solo:

If you're nervous about hosting an exhibition on your own, find someone in a similar situation to collaborate with. However, don't be afraid to go it alone if needed. Hosting a solo exhibition can be a lonely but inspirational experience.

Embracing the iterative approach:

In the startup world, the iterative approach is highly valued. Start with a single piece of art and build from there. I even painted new pieces during my exhibition and switched up the displayed artworks. Create a sense of urgency by offering limited-time artworks. It's okay if your website isn't fully ready, or if some pieces don't have titles. Communicate verbally and share your stories with visitors. Learn through experimentation, and don't be afraid to make mistakes or fail on a small scale.
