Welcome

Welcome to the quaint world of Eymet, a small town nestled in the southwest Dordogne region of France, just a two-hour train ride east of Bordeaux.

In July 2023, I found myself drawn to this town, which has become a home for many who frequent Plum Village, the largest Buddhist monastery in Europe started by the Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh.

It's a unique blend of cultures, with a significant presence of British expatriates.

I had pondered what to do with the return portion of my Paris round-trip ticket from the summer of '22 (KIX - CDG). After spending three months in Paris last year, I yearned to see a different side of France.

It was a book on Henri Matisse I picked up during my first visit to Kogera Bunko that led me to this solo exhibition. A desire to visit the chapel in the South of France that Matisse decorated was also a reason behind my choice.

Amidst the yen's decline, and as someone who had been unemployed for a year, the prospect of a summer holiday in the South of France felt challenging with the influx of vacation-loving locals.

Wanting to travel while living and painting, I let my creative thoughts flow within these constraints.

A search for "Permaculture in France" led me to a platform of equivalent exchange, where work could earn me a place to sleep and meals to eat.

After registering, I promptly received a message from a man named Claude, inviting me to stay with his family.

A short 30-minute video call that very night sealed my fate: I was to spend three weeks with a family of three and their five chickens.

Today, I invite you to enjoy the memories of my summer in Eymet through my artworks.

What you feel is lacking in one place overflows in another, What you believe to be plentiful somewhere may be missing elsewhere

Read ten short stories of the travel

Lily prepared Essays and Poems for this exhibition visitors as she wanted to take them to the journey she took. For her, journey to her exhibition was part of the experience. She thought about the visitors who might be unfamiliar with the abstract art. Also, wanted to share the context of how she ended up being on this journey, and what was left with her.

Reader’s Impression

On a rainy morning, I opened this little book.

With the sunflowers flowing backward, I was drawn into Lily’s journey, unfolding in an unknown town surrounded by nature, like the opening of a Ghibli tale.

Page by page, I felt as if I were standing alongside her in the garden, inhaling the air mixed with the scent of plants, feeling the texture of earth and roots in my hands, the wind blowing away my sweat, and hearing the laughter around a cozy table as the sun went down.

Lily’s experience is unfamiliar to those living in a concrete city, yet it feels so nostalgic. Perhaps it connects to our childhood memories of playing on the ground, or even to something deep-seated about nature within human souls, from some long-forgotten memories thousands of years ago.

“The empty plates like your paintings” is one of my favorite parts. Art is always around us; we don’t need to run to the other end of the world to look for it. However, sometimes it’s difficult to realize in our ordinary lives. This is why we leave our original selves behind, traveling into somewhere unknown, to look back on where we came from, and rediscover the beauty and love around us.

Traveling or staying in a place as a stranger is a magical thing. It continuously raises questions about who we are, our connection to the earth, and our relationships with others. It could have many answers.

Lily shares the gems she discovered on her path: “Being true, being kind.”

Holding this gem in my hand, I can feel courageous to step outside and connect with the world. I closed the book and looked outside the window. The rain was still falling, as is Lily’s journey, and ours.
