Umilabo

Lily Okamoto’s relationship with Umilabo began in 2017 when she met Kota, the owner of this unique sanctuary. Both born and raised in Mie Prefecture, Japan, Kota and Lily left their home and eventually returned, seeking to reconnect with their roots. What started as a pro-bono project for Lily evolved into a profound journey filled with inspiration and a deep desire to give back.

Lily, a multidisciplinary artist whose way of living is through creation, brought her artistic vision to Umilabo, infusing it with her diverse talents beyond painting. Her contributions span across various forms of art, hospitality expertise, and startup acumen, making her an integral part of the transformation of Umilabo.

Umilabo, once an abandoned pearl farm, is now a revitalized space where people come together to innovate, heal, and create joy. Kota envisioned Umilabo as a place where art brings value and meaning, enhancing the lives of those who visit. Lily’s diverse artistry and holistic approach to living have been instrumental in bringing this dream to life.

Together, they are transforming Umilabo into a haven not only for artists but for anyone seeking inspiration and connection. Here, art is a vital element that enriches the soul, set against the backdrop of serene nature. Join us at Umilabo, and be part of a journey that heals, inspires, and reconnects us to our roots.

Lily will be staying at Umilabo in August, 2024 for their first Artist in Residence program.

Ferry Building

Ferry Building - Water Color and Oil Pastel Abstract Art A4 - Lily Okamoto

Year

Mix Medium (acrylics, oil pastel, water color) , matt finish, A4 size

The artwork "Ferry Building" encapsulates a world of hazy memories and transient moments, echoing my time spent in the Bay Area. It embodies the dreamlike quality of an experience that could fade away at any given moment, mirroring the uncertainty of my visa status during that time.

Within the painting, there is a vivid recollection of my first sip of cappuccino at the iconic Blue Bottle Coffee inside the Ferry Building. The rich and distinct flavor lingers, forever etched in my mind as a transformative moment of discovery.

As I gaze upon this artwork, I am reminded of "Sourdough," a beloved book that blurs the lines between fiction and reality. Its pages unfold the vibrant fabric of the Bay Area, with vivid descriptions of the bustling farmers market and the passion of food enthusiasts. The Ferry Building serves as a tangible connection to this captivating narrative, transporting me back to the vivid imagery and captivating storytelling of the book.

Through this artwork, I invite you to step into a realm where memories intertwine with imagination, where the fragility of existence meets the enduring power of literature and culinary delight. Let the essence of the Ferry Building, the taste of cappuccino, and the magic of "Sourdough" envelop you in a world of fleeting beauty and profound introspection.

I grow into you.
