A Curated Guide to Art Galleries and Museums in Kyoto by a Contemporary Abstract Artist
As an artist living on the outskirts of Kyoto, I’ve come to deeply appreciate this city steeped in history and culture. Known for its ancient temples and traditional tea houses, Kyoto is also home to a vibrant art scene that seamlessly blends the old with the new. Over the past few years, I have had the privilege of holding three exhibitions in Kyoto and conducting painting sessions in the charming Gion area, where the echoes of tradition inspire my creative journey.
Having returned to Kyoto after spending three years in Vancouver, I’ve rediscovered the city through the eyes of both a local and a visitor. I enjoy mingling with the French art scene, and Kyoto has a rich cross-cultural connection with France, evident in events like Kyotography and Nuit Blanche. Many French artists and curators actively participate in Kyoto’s art landscape, enriching the city’s creative fabric, addition to the residency Villa Kujyo (Every first thursday, they have a program you can visit the residence).
In my journey as a contemporary artist passionate about culture and aesthetics, I've curated a list of some of the most captivating art galleries in Kyoto. This guide categorizes galleries by contemporary art, architectural interest, proximity to landmarks, and ceramics, offering a diverse exploration for art enthusiasts. I invite you to step beyond the well-trodden paths and explore these hidden gems alongside the iconic sites.
